Fring, another popular third party chatting application available today on various mobile platform including iPhone, Andriod based phones, Windows mobile, and Symbian based phones. You can chat through Fring using existing AIM, MSN, or Skype accounts. The interesting thing about Fring that is available recently is the capability of video chat via Skype.  However, as of now, this capability is only available on iPhone and selected Nokia Symbian devices. But for this post, I’ll be generally concentrating the Fring video call via Skype on the iPhone. Fring’s Commercial after the break.

How to start Video Calling…

First, you need to have a Skype account.*

Second, download Fring application onto your iPhone.**

Load the application, then select add-ons in the “More” tab below.

Select Skype and enter your Skype username and password.

After the account is subscribed, go to “Buddy list” tab and select a friend.

Initialized video call by pressing “Video Call” button.

CAUTION: The video calls can only be initialized over a Wi-Fi Network, and the video can only be viewed one way (you can only see the person you are calling (the PC), but they won’t be able to see you on the iPhone.)

*You can simply get Skype account by going to skype.com
**On the iPhone, you can find this application via the App Store and download it for free!

For those of you who doesn’t know what Google Maps is, it is a web-based service that includes all the maps around the world. This application can be accessed by going onto your favorite web browser and type in maps.google.com in your URL bar, search for Bangkok and click traffic button when available. The one cool thing about this service is that you can see traffic in various cities around the world! And as of this week, Google is introducing live feed traffic monitor of Bangkok, Thailand from the comfort of your own home or even your mobile devices with data plan.

Now, let’s get into what this traffic features of Google Maps are offered here. First, you can see the on going live traffic of Bangkok on four different levels (from red chilies to green grass, and I have a feeling that Bangkok’s going to be red all the time =P), although you can only get general idea of the traffic since it only shows the traffic on the main roads. Second, you can select the day of the week and the time of the day to see the prediction of what’s that traffic is going to look like! But for this feature your going to have to wait a bit since the service has just begun and the previous data collected is very little and unreliable. Third, it’s free! And you can even look at the traffic data on the road using your phones with data plans!

According to one of my friend, this traffic feed is fairly accurate for him to plan his trip from home to school. And ended up saving him a huge chunk of time.

Thailand is the 8th country to have access to this live traffic feed and the only one of the two countries in Southeast Asia to have it as of now (the other is Singapore). So if you are living in Bangkok, Thailand or any of the other 7 countries’ main cities, get on it now and save some road time! (via Manager Online & Twitter @oathth)
